Summer Science Discovery for Teachers

Nanoscience & Nanotechnology: Investigations of the Microscopic World (grades 7–12)

July 14–18, 2008 (CLOSED - COURSE FULL)

Gain a deeper understanding of nanoscience and nanotechnology, and how it impacts today’s world.

Engage in discussions about the particulate nature of matter, the foundation of nanotechnology. Lectures will introduce concepts, then you will move into the lab and use techniques from modern research labs and examine how these tools may be adapted to your classroom. Guest speakers will offer their perspectives on the impact of biotechnology on human health, agriculture, and environmental and ethical concerns.

You will work cooperatively to gain confidence with materials appropriate for classrooms, and develop implementation plans. The content and learning activities will help teachers address state and national standards.

Dates for two follow-up meetings in the fall and spring will be determined. An instructor will help you implement the content during the school year with classroom visits.

Take techniques from the modern research lab back to your classroom.
