Summer Science Discovery for Teachers

Investigating Environment, Soil, Water and Climate to Understand Concepts of Science (grades 1–6)

June 24–27, July 16–18 and July 29–31, 2008

Enhance your Minnesota Science Standards History and Nature of Science knowledge using environment, soil, water and climate to provide the context and content for exploring the relevance of science.

Designed with input from elementary teachers, this workshop will help you better prepare students for science assessments. You’ll conduct hands-on, active-learning experiments and observations involving field and laboratory data gathering, interpretation and summary. Become more comfortable doing science in the classroom and using science as the media for reading and mathematics in an active-learning mode.

You will work in small groups to design and micro-teach two lessons during the workshop and you will develop one lesson independently with the support of workshop facilitators.

We’ll use the Prairie Ecology Bus as a mobile laboratory to explore soils, water and biomes of southwest Minnesota in addition to field explorations at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center. You’ll also be introduced to grade-appropriate science literature and local science resource citizens able to assist in the teaching of science.

Find out how to make science more relevant to your students using environment, soil, water and climate.
